Social Media Harmful? It All Depends. . . .

Social media can be just as harmful as it is helpful in the wrong hands. There have been many people who use these sites to cyber bully people. Take for example the Steubenville rape case. The 16 year old victim is constantly being bullied by her peers. They send her tweets and Facebook post saying that they are going to cause bodily harm to her. One girl, the cousin of one of the charged suspects tweeted to the girl "you ripped my family apart, you made my cousin cry, so when I see you b***h it's gone be a homicide".
That just goes to show how social media can take one turn for the worse. A recent website http://socialnetworking.procon.org/ reports that "Social networking sites facilitate cyberbullying.49.5% of students reported being the victims of bullying online and 33.7% reported committing bullying behavior online. [110] 800,000 minors were harassed or cyberbullied on Facebook according to a June 2012Consumer Reports survey. [81] Middle school children who were victims of cyberbullying were almost twice as likely to attempt suicide. [46] Adults can also be victims of cyberbullying, from social, familial, or workplace aggression being displayed on social media sites. [111]"Social media can easily be used to harm others may it be threw Facebook,Twitter,Instagram or any SNS for that matter. I don't believe that the blame should be placed on social media but on the abusers themselves. Though SNS such as the ones I previously listed make it rather easy to harm someone it still lies in that persons hands to do the right thing.
