ProCon.org. "Social Networking ProCon.org" ProCon.org. 22 Mar. 2013. Web. 1 Apr. 2013. <http://socialnetworking.procon.org/>. This website's purpose is to argue weather or not social media is helpful or harmful to society. The site is primarily a statistics site it gives pros and cons as to why social media is harmful and helpful. The site list a pro and then list the con of that pro right next to it. I used this site to include statistics in my blog for both sides of the argument. This website was extremely helpful for me. I was able to find statistics to support my claim that social media is more helpful than harmful.
http://www.parentfurther.com/technology-media/social-networking/benefits "Benefits of Online Social Networking." Home. N.p., n.d. Web. 01 Apr. 2013. This article makes the claim that social media is indeed helpful to society. This article list many ways that social media is helpful rather than harmful.I think what is a important part of this article is that it proves that social media can indeed be helpful to kids! The article list things such as, gaining social confidence, and keeping in touch with families as reasons why social media is helpful. This article even suggest that social media is helpful in school. It states that teachers often use social networking to create blogs(oh the irony!), discussion forms, videos and more.
I found the source very helpful because it proves my claim that social media is indeed more helpful than harmful!

This website is a social media blog much like mine. The site argues both sides of the argument and allows people to voice their opinion for either side. I used the site to support make a claim stating that social media can be helpful to business and to those trying to keep in touch with others. I don't think this site was as helpful for me as others were but I did find that business information helpful.

When It Is All Said & Done . .
I personally stand on the fence as to weather or not social media does more harm than it does good in our society. I believe that it really just depends on who is using social media as well as what they are using it for. Social media in the right hands can benefit our society in a multiplicity of ways. One way social media can be helpful is by connecting those that have either lost contact with one another or who are in search of someone. For example, Utah native, Jenessa Simons recently used social media to find her birth mother. Jenessa posted a picture with some information about her birth mom and in just three short days the picture had over 70,000 shares. Since then many people have followed in her footsteps and successfully succeeded in finding there birth parents as well as estranged relatives'.
Social media also helps society through many other things such as politics. Many people use social media to keep track of current events in today's politics. Everything from live tweeting debates to Facebook like pages have helped to increase people's interest in politics. Sites such as ksl.com suggest that 58% of Americans get most of their political news from social media. Social media is perfect for those who like to stay updated on politics because they can access it anywhere. May it be via email, Facebook, Twitter or any other SNS for that matter. However, not all people use social networking sites for a positive cause such as Jenessa did or to keep up with politics.
Social media can be just as harmful as it is helpful in the wrong hands. There have been many people who use these sites to cyber bully people. Take for example the Steubenville rape case. The 16 year old victim is constantly being bullied by her peers. They send her tweets and Facebook post saying that they are going to cause bodily harm to her. One girl, the cousin of one of the charged suspects tweeted to the girl "you ripped my family apart, you made my cousin cry, so when I see you b***h it's gone be a homicide". That just goes to show you that he effects of social media just depend on the situation.
Social media is constantly in our faces thanks to the advancements in technology. With so many people having access to SNS its hard to control what affects social media has on society. I feel as if you control what affects social media can have on you. As far as society, social media doesn't corrupt society for it was already corrupted long before social media. Social media just helps the cause when in the wrong hands. In the right hands we can began to better ourselves and our society.

Social Media, Globally ? Nationally ?
Social media is relentlessly used globally & nationally to gain social justice. Take the Trayvon Martin case for example. Without social media the case could have very well gone over everyone's head. Thanks to African American social media groups in about three weeks the news was taking over social media.Almost instantly it was a trending topic on Twitter and other SNS. This news hurt the nation and they took action quickly by organizing multiple rallies as well as protests. Millions of signatures for a petition that Martins mother organized on change.org were published for justice for Trayvon. Trayvon's mother strongly believes that justice was served because she got the arrest she wanted. This is just one case of many that social media was able to help achieve social justice.
Social media can also help in other cases, for example the Huggies pampers case. Many fathers came together and protested against a Huggies ad campaign. The ad suggest that fathers are incompetent and are unable to handle such an easy task as diaper changing. Many fathers used social media to speak about the ad as well as gain signatures for a online petition. The complaints got Huggies attention and they removed the ad and released an apology statement to the raging fathers for the misconception of the ad.
Social media has helped in many cases similar to these. The outcome isn't always the same but the affects of social media are still rather powerful.

Social Media Harmful? It All Depends. . . .
Social media can be just as harmful as it is helpful in the wrong hands. There have been many people who use these sites to cyber bully people. Take for example the Steubenville rape case. That just goes to show how social media can take one turn for the worse. A recent website http://socialnetworking.procon.org/ reports that "Social networking sites facilitate cyberbullying.49.5% of students reported being the victims of bullying online and 33.7% reported committing bullying behavior online. [110] 800,000 minors were harassed or cyberbullied on Facebook according to a June 2012Consumer Reports survey. [81] Middle school children who were victims of cyberbullying were almost twice as likely to attempt suicide. [46] Adults can also be victims of cyberbullying, from social, familial, or workplace aggression being displayed on social media sites. [111]"Social media can easily be used to harm others may it be threw Facebook,Twitter,Instagram or any SNS for that matter. I don't believe that the blame should be placed on social media but on the abusers themselves. Though SNS such as the ones I previously listed make it rather easy to harm someone it still lies in that persons hands to do the right thing.

Social Media Beneficial ? Yes, Indeed It Is !
Benefits? Yes ! Social media has quite a few of them. Social media is beneficial in a multiplicity of ways. One way social media can be helpful is by connecting those that have either lost contact with one another or who are in search of someone. For example, Utah native, Jenessa Simons recently used social media to find her birth mother. Sites such as http://www.parentfurther.com/technology-media/social-networking/benefits say" Keeping in touch with family members that live far away can become much easier through the use of online social networking. By sharing updates, photos, videos, and messages, family members can stay connected even if the live across the country—or the world." With just the click of a button we can be in contact with people on the other side of the world. Sites such as http://socialnetworking.procon.org/ suggest that "70% of adult social networking users visit the sites to connect with friends and family [12], and increased online communication strengthens relationships. [13] 52% of teens using social media report that using the sites has helped their relationships with friends, 88% report that social media helps them stay in touch with friends they cannot see regularly, 69% report getting to know students at their school better, and 57% make new friends. [14]."
Social media also helps society through many other things such as politics. Many people use social media to keep track of current events in today's politics.According to http://socialnetworking.procon.org/ "Social networking sites are the top news source for 27.8% of Americans, ranking below newspapers (28.8%) and above radio (18.8%) and print publications (6%). [1]" Everything from live tweeting debates to Facebook like pages have helped to increase people's interest in politics. Sites such as ksl.com suggest that "58% of Americans get most of their political news from social media." Social media is perfect for those who like to stay updated on politics because they can access it anywhere. May it be via email, Facebook, Twitter or any other SNS for that matter. Social media can also be helpful for organizations, a business or a college. A business could use a SNS to broadcast information about their business, boost their business or even multiple events that they might have going on.

In My Life.
Social media plays a rather large roll in my life. From the time I wake up till the time I go to sleep I am using social media. I have accounts to multiple SNS(social networking sites) such as Facebook,Twitter, and Instagram. Alot of people wonder why I have so many accounts and how do I find the time to keep up. I'll be the first to admit that it is indeed rather difficult to have multiple accounts. I use each account for something different but it's the only the way I can manage to keep up with friends, family & society. I move around alot so that's where Facebook comes in! I use to try and stay in touch with friends as well as family via phone until my phone crashed. I moved around so much that I had one to many contacts and texts and it shut my phone down. That's when I decided to sign up for Facebook so that I can stay in contact with the people I love most. When im not checking my Facebook notifications I am twitter tweeting and re-tweeting away. As far as twitter goes I use it to keep up with what is going on in society as well as get the latest gossip. "35 global heads of state, every US Cabinet agency, 84% of US state governors, every major candidate for US President, and more than 40% of top global religious leaders are on Twitter. [157] "according to http://socialnetworking.procon.org/. I am relentlessly looking at the twitter accounts of stars and news channels. Without twitter I would be so far behind in the news and the gossip! I use Instagram to post pictures of upcoming event info, myself, and funny little pictures that I find on the web. It's alot of work to keep up these sites but I manage to make it work somehow.
